Sorry Ladies, Sahan Is Taken
Matador recording artist Jennifer O'Connor stopped by the store prior to her gig at the Cactus Club last week. Imagine our pleasant surprise to find the visit immortalized on her blog, under the heading: 7/18/08 -- JO'C + Milwaukee + Atomic Records + Sahan = True Love Forever
In addition to the Sahan-love, Jennifer was quite taken with our humble village: "I totally heart Milwaukee. Previously, I'd been to this fine city only once to play and had such a great time. I wondered if it was a fluke. I now know it was no fluke -- Milwaukee may just be the finest place on Earth."
Milwaukee loves you, too, Jennifer!
Check out all the Perez Hilton-worthy details here:

And we would be remiss if we didn't gently remind you that Jennifer O'Connor's new album, Here With Me, will be released on August 19.

>>> New Releases for July 22!
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Just Like Kicking Jesus CDEP/12" EP (12 Tonar/A)
New mini-album from The Brian Jonestown Massacre was recorded in Reykjavik and showcases five songs (four previously unheard) and runs over 27-minutes. The first track of this release, "Amazing Electric Cave (Learn To Speak Icelandic You Smug Sh!t Version)" features the vocals of Icelandic artist and filmmaker Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir. The vinyl, imported from Iceland, is limited to 1000 copies and is on color wax.
Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene) - Something For All Of Us... CD (Arts & Crafts)
Second album in the "BSS Presents" series (the first was Kevin Drew) is "...chock-full of woozy sing-alongs and pulsing ballads, suggest(ing) that Canning is just as responsible for BSS's life-affirming guitar pop as Drew. [7.5]" -- Pitchfork
Black Kids - Partie Traumatic CD (Columbia)
Contagiously catchy album from the internet-buzzing indie dance group includes the alterna-hit "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You." Black Kids are also featured on the soundtrack to American Teen, also in stock. Not familiar with Black Kids? Treat yourself to a free MP3 remix download here: http://www.previewnewmusic.com/black_kids/
CSS - Donkey CD (Sub Pop)
CSS's follow-up to 2006's Cansei De Ser Sexy is tough, street-ready, and recreates the frenetic energy of their live shows. Equal parts dance party, urban circus, and out-and-out chaos. CD now, vinyl due August 5.
One Day As A Lion (The Mars Volta/Rage Against The Machine) - CD (Anti)
New project formed by comrades Jon Theodore (The Mars Volta) and Zack De La Rocha (Rage Against The Machine). The result sounds like Led Zep meets Dr. Dre. File under: The Mars Volta/Rage Against The Machine.
Dr. Dog - Fate CD/LP+CD (Park The Van)
Inventive, magnificently realized, and absolutely irresistible, Fate sees the Philadelphia-based quintet filtering the gamut of American popular music into its own idiosyncratic brand of blue-eyed, dilated-pupil soul. As ever, Dr. Dog makes magic from an enduring pop palette of intricate harmonies, shape-shifting melodies, and ramshackle audio ingenuity, all presented through the band's slightly skewed and utterly individualistic outlook. HQ-180 vinyl includes a copy on CD. Both versions come with a bonus seven-inch sporting two non-album tracks (while supplies last).
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip CD+DVD (Null Corporation)
Limited release (individually numbered edition of 250,000) contains ten new tracks, a 24-page booklet, a sticker pack and a DVD with five live performances of tracks from the album. CD now, vinyl next month.
Buddy Guy - Skin Deep CD/2xLP (Jive)
New album from the blues legend features The Memphis Horns, Willie Mitchell, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph and Quinn Sullivan.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Déjà Vu Live CD (Reprise)
A mix of CSN&Y classics and more recent anti-war material from Neil Young. Only 181 more days until our national nightmare is over.
Chris Difford (Squeeze) - The Last Temptation Of Chris CD (Airline)
Second solo release from the Squeeze lyricist was created with another master craftsman, Boo Hewerdine (The Bible), who co-wrote and produced the album.
Paul Weller - 22 Dreams CD (Yep Roc)
The mod-rock journeyman's ninth solo album contains guest appearances from those he has influenced -- including Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer of Oasis, as well as Graham Coxon of Blur.
Buffalo Killers - Let It Ride CD/LP+CD (Alive)
Drawing comparisons in sound to Blue Cheer, Cream, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Mountain and the Allman Brothers Band, this trio is deeply rooted in a signature '60s psychedelic and '70s blues rock sound. The album was recorded in Akron, Ohio with producer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at his Akron Analog studio. The initial pressing of the Let It Ride vinyl version, limited to 500 copies, includes a bonus live concert CD recorded in Los Angeles at the Orpheum Theatre during the Black Crowes tour by Mikey Jones, a fan that literally just bootlegged the concert and sent the band a copy.
P.W. Long - God Bless The Drunkard's Dog CD (Southern)
P.W. Long's fourth album is the long-awaited follow-up to 2003's Remembered. Again employing the powerhouse drums of one Taylor Young (formerly of Young Heart Attack) the duo slug it out in what is definitely his most rounded and complete album to date -- all the vintage swagger of Mule at their most cocksure along with the more fragile poignancy of P.W.'s solo songs.
Bodies Of Water - A Certain Feeling CD/LP (Secretly Canadian)
Instantly familiar melodies, rich harmonic color, expansively deft arrangements, and compositions that ebb, flow, and double back on themselves in cathartic synchronicity. Though no two songs sound entirely similar, it's a cohesive album that comes out feeling like the anthemic prog/gospel/psychedelic/Kraut/tribal movie score that Ennio Morricone and Phil Spector never got around to collaborating on.
The Oh Sees - Sucks Blood CD (Tomlab)
Steeped in the natural hues of analog and reverb, Sucks Blood is a subtle gem of irresistible pop and basement psychedelia. Immediate classics include the ghostly saw-tinged title track and the charming lumber of the harmonious "Ship."
Dredd Foole - Kissing The Contemporary Bliss 2xCD (Family Vineyard)
Kissing The Contemporary Bliss kicks up the most outward bound and staggering approaches to Gus Cannon's "Walk Right In" and Robert Johnson's "Stones In My Passway" while offering ear-popping originals colored by Erika Elder's jug blowin' and Coot Moon's ecstatic, reverb-dosed banjo. You'll hear nothing like this in 2008 or beyond. Packaged in a mini-LP-styled gatefold book with full color photos of The Foole in action.
The Loved - Everything, Anything, Nothing CD (Temporary Residence)
Formed in 1996 and disbanded less than two years later, The Loved were an accidentally mysterious pop trio from the unlikely locale of Louisville, KY. In truth, they were just three ordinary guys making Beatles-inspired pop with a few nods to some '70s and '80s guitar gods. Everything, Anything, Nothing collects the entire recorded history of The Loved, culled from the only two recording sessions during their brief existence.
The Avett Brothers - The Second Gleam CD/LP (Ramseur)
AKA The Gleam II. This second installment in the Gleam series sings to the uncommon senses of the common man. The record walks calmly and powerfully among fragile and hard-learned themes of life and song, passing through loss, change, hope, death, dedication to family, late nights in the hospital, love as always and much more. At once plain and poetic, and as simple and complicated as those who will give their time to hear it.
Pepper - Pink Crustaceans & Good Vibrations CD (Law)
Fifth studio album sees the band at their most eclectic and captures the essence of the Kona Boys arriving in California as seasoned veterans of Rock-with-a-capital-"R."
Misery Signals - Controller CD (Ferret)
Latest CD from the bi-national (Wisconsin and Canada) hardcore math-rockers continues to blur the line between metal and their unique technical ambience.
Forward, Russia! - Life Processes CD (Mute)
Second album from Leeds, UK quartet merges the angular hardcore of At The Drive-In with the stomp-rock of Queens Of The Stone Age.
Lackthereof (Menomena) - Your Anchor CD (Barsuk)
New album from Danny Seim, a founding member of Portland, Oregon's Menomena. Your Anchor includes a cover of The National's "Fake Empire," a song that fits perfectly with the somewhat depressing lyrical themes of the album. CD now, vinyl due September 9.
Azeda Booth - In Flesh Tones CD (Absolutely Kosher)
While there are no women in this Canadian group, Azeda Booth share the same sublime, androgynously-voiced space as Antony And The Johnsons, jazz great Little Jimmy Scott, and Philly soul angels The Stylistics. Their debut is a thing of dazzling beauty and fragile inspiration, simple in its celebration of sound and movement.
Gentleman Auction House - Alphabet Graveyard CD (Emergency Umbrella)
Debut release features impeccably tasteful arrangements of everything from reggae-infused rhythms to jangly Motown guitar flourishes, along with solemn folk ballads, epic mood pieces and infectiously danceable pop.
Lustmord - [Other] CD (Hydra Head)
Lustmord's latest collection of night terrors and Lynchian atmospherics features guests Adam Jones (Tool), Aaron Turner (Isis) and Buzz Osborne (Melvins).
Seth Kauffman - Research CD (Park The Van)
The second album showcasing Kauffman's unique lo-fi North Carolina funk sound, Research achieves a complex creative depth and emotional appeal that's lacking in most modern rock music. The songs are interwoven with a sort of early Wailers meets Motown meets Beck in the Delta sound. A pioneer for funky invention, Seth forged beyond his previous roots-soul band, The Choosy Beggars, to play all the instruments, write, produce, and engineer this record himself.
Christopher Titus - Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding 2xCD (Comedy Central)
Christopher Titus's breakout hit one-man show is now available on double-CD. Chronicling Titus's remarkable rollercoaster life with tales of insanity, parental fist fighting, and then some really crazy stuff, the show is an hour and a half of unbelievable, and unbelievably funny stories.
Red State Update - How Freedom Sounds CD (Dualtone)
An album of novelty songs from Red State Update -- an ongoing online satirical political series produced by performers Jonathan Shockley and Travis Harmon. Look for them to gain further prominence as the 2008 presidential election heats up with appearances on CNN, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report -- not to mention their ongoing plethora of short films on YouTube and MySpace.
Slightly Stoopid - Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid CD (Stoopid)
Contains all seven tracks from the EP of the same name, "...as well as other outtakes, rarities, and brand new studio joints." sez the band.
F*cked Up - Year Of The Pig CDEP/12"+MP3/UK 7"/Japanese 7" (Matador)
Each version features different track listings. Call for availability. Sorry, all formats not guaranteed to be in stock due to extremely limited pressings.
The Import Zone...
The Music - Strength In Numbers CD (import)
The band's third album was recorded in by uber producers Flood (Killers/U2) and Paul Hartnoll (ex-Orbital).
David Bowie - Live Santa Monica '72 CD/2xLP (import)
First official release of this legendary, oft-bootlegged show. Captured at the height of his Ziggy Stardust period, this pristine live document shows David Bowie at the peak of his creative powers performing such hits as "Life On Mars," "Changes" and "Suffragette City." All copies are individually numbered.
Simply The Best...
People Under The Stairs - The Om Years 2xCD (Om)
Two-disc collection featuring fan favorites, B-sides and rarities -- the first ever Om retrospective of dusty breaks and funky rhyme classics from the hip-hop legends.
Simply The Rest...
High Places - 03/07-09/07 CD (Thrill Jockey)
A collection of tracks previously available on seven-inch vinyl and compilations -- now available for the first time on CD. High Places songs contain a range of aural layers: bells and bird calls over a wash of ocean waves; mallets hitting mixing bowls over treated guitar and glockenspiel; reflective vocals over inventive and infectious beats.
The Compilation Zone...
Various Artists (Danny Tenaglia) - Futurism 2xCD (Tommy Boy)
28 tracks remixed by Danny Tenaglia -- featuring the smash single "The Space Dance," heard from Coachella to Ibiza.
The Reissue Zone...
Blue Mountain - Dog Days CD (Roadrunner)
1995 release from the Oxford, MS-based trio is one of the true lost gems of alt-country. Often overlooked in mainstream circles, the album displays the band's Southern-gothic spitfire and roots-rock rhythms all a-shaking with punk rock authority. Includes five bonus tracks. Look for a new album from the reunited band next month.
Julie Doiron - Loneliest In The Morning CD (Jagjaguwar)
Originally released in 1997 by Sub Pop, Loneliest In The Morning was Doiron's second solo release and her first release as Julie Doiron (having dropped the moniker Broken Girl). This reissue comes complete with three bonus tracks: "Second Time" from the split seven-inch with Snailhouse and the tracks "Who Will Be The One" and "Too Much" from the seven-inch release Doiron recorded with the Wooden Stars.
John Terrill - Frowny Frown CD (Family Vineyard)
Between 1988 and 1998, John Terrill (co-founder of the late '70s new/no wave Dancing Cigarettes) recorded this album and made a few copies for close friends and for mailing to musical heroes. In another era, it could have stood next to Scott Walker or Michael Hurley's early albums or even Randy Burns' LPs on ESP Disk. It's an out-of-time classic that mixes honey baked orchestration, acoustic soul, and pop-psychedelia into cracked and spellbinding songs. Now reissued for all and remastered with a bonus track from 1984.
Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance SACD (4AD)
Dead Can Dance - Garden Of Earthly Delights EP SACD (4AD)
Dead Can Dance - Spleen And Ideal SACD (4AD)

Out of print for years and years, the entire Dead Can Dance catalog is finally reissued and remastered in ultra-lush SACD editions. However, once these SACD Hybrids (compatible with regular CD players) are gone the remastered Dead Can Dance catalog will be available on handy, dandy regular old-timey CDs.

Captain Beefheart - It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper 2xLP (Sundazed)
Recorded in part as the follow-up to Safe As Milk, Beefheart's debut from earlier in 1967, the material on It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper was re-recorded, truncated, and issued -- without the Captain's approval -- as Strictly Personal in 1968. Mastered directly from the original analog tapes and featuring a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl, Sundazed's stunning gatefold double-LP release of this infamously enigmatic opus comes to you wrapped in a sharp outer sleeve bearing specially commissioned artwork by Frank Zappa/Straight Records illustrator Cal Schenkel replicating the album's planned '67 design. Inside are rare photos and fascinating, exhaustive liner notes by Magic Band drummer John "Drumbo" French.

Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) - Countless Centuries Fled... LP (Table Of The Elements)
With ecstatic, rocking squalor, Lee Ranaldo summons some dazzling skronk, reminiscent of early Sonic Youth, the soaring drone of John Cale, and even the looping orientalia of Dream Syndicate-era La Monte Young. So duck and cover, as Lee fires an impeccably aimed fusillade across the screaming fields of sonic love. Limited edition etched vinyl. File under: Sonic Youth.
Oren Ambarchi - A Final Kiss On Poisoned Cheeks LP (Table Of The Elements)
There is a vivid breadth to the guitar deconstructions of Australian Oren Ambarchi. A Final Kiss On Poisoned Cheeks offers a dizzying gaze straight into a chasm of extreme frequencies paint-peelingly high and bowel-churningly low all set atop a sub-strata of menace, angst, and contemplative beauty. Limited edition etched vinyl.
Hercules & Love Affair - You Belong 12"/7" (UK import)
The 12" offers remix goodness. The 7" is on color vinyl and sports the track "I'm Telling You" on the flip.
Jay Reatard/Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey b/w Oh It's Such A Shame 7" (Matador)
Oh It's Such A Shame is right. You might be hip to the story on how quickly these sold out online before we even had a chance to snag any. The bottom line: we sadly do not have this, but if you believe in god or have faith in a guardian record angel, you can leave your name and number with us and we'll let you know if we receive any of the copies rumored to be repressed within a few weeks. Expect to pay $$$.
Cryptacize/Why? - Unusual Animals Vol. 4 7" (Asthmatic Kitty)

Strange Boys - Woe Is You And Me 7" (In The Red)
These titles now available on vinyl.

Phew! Check the Events page of wmse.org for details.
>>> Full Tilt Boogie!! Check out these featured new releases in our fancy listening station!
Ron Sexsmith - Exit Strategy Of The Soul CD (Yep Roc)
On his latest album, Sexsmith expands his musical canon with vaulted yet direct string arrangements and sweeping horn sections, resulting in a work equal in both musical breadth and emotional depth. Recorded in both the cold of classical London and the sweaty flamboyance of Havana, Exit Strategy Of The Soul is a study of the beauty that can come from the heartfelt melding of seemingly contrary ideas, be they musical, cultural, or emotional.
My Brightest Diamond - A Thousand Shark's Teeth CD/LP+MP3 (Asthmatic Kitty)
A Thousand Shark's Teeth is charming, playful, daring, foreboding, graceful, eclectic, exciting, and visceral. The songs marry vast instrumentation -- marimbas, harps, clarinets, French horns, rabid guitars, vibraphones and more -- to create an unequaled amalgamation of style and color.
Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends CD/2xLP+CD (Capitol)
Hugely-anticipated new album finds Coldplay stepping up their musical game under the watchful knob-twiddling of producers Brian Eno (Bowie, Talking Heads, U2) and Markus Dravs (Bjork, Arcade Fire). Double-vinyl includes a copy on CD.
Supergrass - Diamond Hoo Ha CD/LP (Astralwerks)
Previously in stock on import, now available domestically. Recorded in Berlin's legendary Hansa studios over a three-week period with producer Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) Diamond Hoo Ha is a notably rollicking departure from 2005's more pastoral and reflective Road To Rouen.
The Watson Twins - Fire Songs CD/LP (Vanguard)
You probably know them from their work with Jenny Lewis. Identical Kentucky-born twins Chandra and Leigh Watson can't be easily put in a musical pigeonhole, but they'll cop to folk, gospel, blues and country as early influences. The album was produced by Russell Pollard and J. Soda (members from various incarnations of Sebadoh, Earlimart, Everest, and Folk Implosion).
