>>> New Releases for October 7!

Deerhoof - Offend Maggie CD/LP+MP3 (Kill Rock Stars)
Ultimately, Deerhoof is not about notes and rhythms, but about emotion. Deerhoof has that Brian Wilson gift for communicating every shading of their lyrics, even with the barest of rock and roll provisions. This is their "feel" record -- loose and funky and deliciously rough around the edges. It should please longtime fans as well as newcomers to their extensive sound library. Another masterpiece. You can see Deerhoof live at Turner Hall next Wednesday (10/15). Tickets are available right here at Atomic.

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's - Not Animal CD/LP+MP3 (Epic)
Margot & The Nuclear So & So's - Animal! LP+MP3 (Epic)
Indianapolis-based eight-piece rock collective releases their highly anticipated sophomore album. Produced by Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine). From that one recording session were born two separate releases, Animal! and Not Animal. It's kind of confusing, but we think you have to go the vinyl route (MP3s included) to get the whole enchilada. You can see them live at Turner Hall on Saturday, November 1. Tickets are available now right here at Atomic.

Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul CD/CD+DVD (Big Brother/Reprise)
Hailed as the band's best work in a decade (well, Noel sez so anyway) Dig Out Your Soul offers a musical oasis for rock fans everywhere. The limited edition adds a 40-minute Making Of documentary and a music video. Each format comes with a bonus CD single with the Primal Scream remix of "The Shock Of The Lightning." Double-LP should arrive in a week-or-two.

Bob Dylan - Tell Tale Signs: Rare & Unreleased 1989-2006 2xCD/4xLP+MP3 (Sony/BMG)
Subtitled: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8. 27 unreleased recordings, studio demos, alternate takes, live tracks and more. Includes 60-page booklet of rare photos, in-depth liner notes and complete recording credits. Features the previously unreleased song "Dreamin' Of You." Deluxe 180-gram vinyl box set includes complete MP3 download. All formats come with a free 11x17 poster.

Rachael Yamagata - Elephants/Teeth Sinking Into Heart 2xCD (WB)
The singer/songwriter/pianist with the sultry voice unveils a new double-disc set. Elephants is darker and more vulnerable while the guitar-driven Teeth Sinking Into Heart is grittier and more defiantly cynical. Together they reveal two sides of one of today's most entrancing artists.

Crooked Fingers - Forfeit/Fortune CD (Constant Artists Inc.)
This new full-length from Eric Bachmann is only available at select indie stores. Includes "Your Control" with Neko Case. Free poster with purchase. Vinyl coming soon on Milwaukee's own Foreign Leisure Records!

Aqualung - Words And Music CD (Verve)
Latest set of sophisticated piano pop from Matt Hale.

The Clash - Live At Shea Stadium CD (Epic)
Complete sixteen-song live set recorded at Shea Stadium, 1982.

Juana Molina - Un Dia CD (Domino)
The fifth release from Argentinean artist Molina is a brave departure from her previous work. It's every bit as personal and intimate, but pronounced with rhythms and with bold low end added to the mix. The rhythms flow over and inside each other, played out on wood and cymbal and bombo leguero, and woven from electronic glitches. David Byrne, NPR, and The NY Times are some of her many supporters.

Jay Reatard - Matador Singles '08 CD/LP+MP3 (Matador)
All the songs from the six limited-edition Matador 7"s released in 2008 collected in one place for your convenience. Plus one extra exclusive track for effort. 180-gram LP in short supply and may be gone by the time you read this. Oh yeah... did someone say Jay Reatard will be performing a free in-store right here at Atomic Records next Monday (10/13) at 7PM? Well, that someone may be right. Keep your eyes on your inbox for further details.

The Week That Was (Field Music) - The Week That Was CD (Memphis Industries)
Debut album from the British electropop outfit led by Field Music's Peter Brewis. Musically the record is an expansive tribute, paying direct (and indirect) homage to the wildly ambitious Linn Drum and Fairlight experiments of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and Tin Drum-era Japan. Mojo's Album Of The Month for September 2008. File under: Field Music.

Annuals - Such Fun CD (Canvasback/Sony)
Straddling the line between epic post-rock, pop/rock guitar crunch, woozy country swings and lovely orchestral ballads, Such Fun embraces a vast landscape of musical richness, combining frontman Adam Baker's accomplished songcraft with colorful instrumentation. CD now, vinyl soon.

Rise Against - Appeal To Reason CD (DGC)
Latest from the Chicago punk band. Initial copies come with a bonus 7" sporting a cover of Minor Threat's "Minor Threat" on the B-side. CD now, vinyl soon.

Senses Fail - Life Is Not A Waiting Room CD (Vagrant)
Latest from the New Jersey hardcore band.

Grails - Doomsdayer's Holiday CD (Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Expands their already-broad palette with '70s European film noir and cosmic free jazz explorations which compliments the Middle Eastern psychedelic folk/metal the group is known for. CD now, vinyl due 10/21.

Jolie Holland - The Living And The Dead CD/LP+MP3 (Anti)
With a vocal style hailed by the Village Voice as "sultry and sweet, despairing and lonely", Jolie has experimented in the past with various settings for her unique, jazz-inflected voice. This time working with such collaborators as M. Ward and Marc Ribot, she has embraced both the rocking side of her roots, and the compositional possibilities of the studio, multi-tracking her voice for the first time. The results have intensified the evocative moodiness of her music but also brought out a rollicking looseness.

Pretenders - Break Up The Concrete CD/LP+CD (Shangri-La)
New album finds Chrissie with a new band (including Pernice Brother James Walbourne on guitar and former Son Volt'er Eric Heywood on pedal steel) and moving into a loose, improvisatory alt-country style. Limited first edition of the CD comes with seed paper. Vinyl includes the CD.

Catfish Haven - Devastator CD/LP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian)
It's a question asked by anyone and everyone who pays attention to popular music: Who is making music today that will be the classic rock of tomorrow? Consider Catfish Haven, whose latest release sounds like a forgotten album from the '70s rescued from a used record bin. Much to love here if you're a fan of The Hold Steady or Lucero, Devastator carries in it's genes the legacy of similarly titled albums -- Kiss' Destroyer, ZZ Top's Eliminator, and Lou Reed's Transformer. Available for audition in one of our listening stations. Vinyl includes MP3 download. (All formats come with a download coupon to get their first proper recording, the Good Friends EP.)

The Spinto Band - Moonwink CD/LP+CD (Park The Van)
The Spinto Band interlace rich, textured guitars, unconventional orchestration, and multiple-part vocal harmonies into exciting new avenues of indie-pop. The music is at once outlandish, kinetic, and luminous, while still restrained in a way that pays homage to the classic pop song, bringing to mind a contemporary mix of The Beatles, Berlin, and Bowie. 180-gram vinyl includes a copy of the CD. For a limited time all formats come with a bonus 7" with two non-LP tracks, including a cover of "Airport" by The Motors.

The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed CD (Vice)
The fourth album from Mike Skinner is a reminder of why we all fell in love with The Streets in the first place. It's a charming, thoughtful and incisive album -- a return to form with cinematic storytelling and irresistible pop hooks. CD now, vinyl due 11/14.

Emilie Autumn - Opheliac 2XCD (Adrenaline)
Having performed on albums for Courtney Love, Billy Corgan, and Die Warzau, Emilie has finally moved to center stage with an album of devilishly dark lyrics powered by an industrial strength voice. Written in a style she calls "victoriandustrial", Opheliac draws upon Emilie's influences as a child prodigy classical violinist and combines them with her passion for the harsh industrial of Laibach and Front 242 and the sublime melodicism of Depeche Mode. The result is a harpsichord-heavy romp through Victorian asylums where screaming is allowed and girls always get revenge. Deluxe double-disc package with enhanced video content and 24-page booklet.

Earthless - Live At Roadburn 2xCD (Tee Pee)
The heavy psychedelic trio captured live at the annual Roadburn Festival in Holland -- a celebration of tube-driven distortion, crackling electric guitars, and the many fans who come to celebrate the mighty riff. CD now, double-LP available 10/21.

Imperative Reaction - Minus All CD (Metropolis)
Latest from L.A.-based electronic musician Ted Phelps delivers an intoxicating mix of driving, urgent melodies and anthemic vocals.

The Rosebuds - Life Like CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
Life Like finds the Rosebuds scaling back the dance that drove 2007's Night Of The Furies and returning to a more restrained and home-oriented record. Features Matthew McCaughan of Portastatic and Wisconsin's own Justin Vernon (Bon Iver).

These Arms Are Snakes - Tail Swallower And Dove CD/LP+MP3 (Suicide Squeeze)
Seattle supergroup (members of Kill Sadie and Botch) finds a new home and a new drive under the guidance of Suicide Squeeze records. Heavily rhythmic and loud, the album is sure to draw comparisons to an array of '90s Chicago staples like The Jesus Lizard or Big Black. Color vinyl LP includes an MP3 download.

Mount Eerie w/ Julie Doiron & Fred Squire - Lost Wisdom CD/LP (P.W. Elverum)
Phil Elverum (aka Mount Eerie) teams up with a couple musical kindred spirits, including Julie Doiron (Eric's Trip) -- his favorite singer since hearing her as a teen in the early '90s. A subtly beautiful record. The LP comes in a giant poster sleeve.

Lambchop - OH (Ohio) CD (Merge)
Kurt Wagner's new record is produced by Roger Moutenot (Sleater Kinney, Yo La Tengo) and features a more solidified backing band than previous records. All this lends itself to the most consistent album he has made since 2000's Nixon. Country/rock/soul goodness.

Department Of Eagles (Grizzly Bear) - In Ear Park CD (4AD)
Department Of Eagles is Daniel Rossen (Grizzly Bear) and Fred Nicolaus. An intimate and personal collection of songs, much of the material that Daniel brought to In Ear Park draws on memories from his childhood, especially those relating to his father, who passed away in 2007 and to whom the album is dedicated. Many of Fred's contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving the album at times an elegiac feel. Initial copies come with a bonus 7" 45. Vinyl delayed until November. File under: Grizzly Bear.

Gregory & The Hawk - Moenie and Kitchi CD (FatCat)
Gregory And The Hawk is the project of Meredith Godreau, a native New Yorker with a captivating voice that hovers between windchimes and churchbells, and an undeniable gift for gently insistent melodies and earnest metaphor. Godreau's gift for emotive acoustic pop places her squarely within the tradition upheld by artists like Susan Christie, Elliott Smith, and Regina Spektor.

Castanets - City Of Refuge CD/LP+MP3 (Asthmatic Kitty)
Largely recorded in a motel room in Overton, Nevada, City Of Refuge is an uneasy, asymmetric weave of sung songs, chants, electronic noise solos and spaghetti-western guitar interludes. Guest appearances by Jana Hunter, Sufjan Stevens, Dawn Smithson (Jessamine, Sunn O)))), Scott Tuma (Souled American, Boxhead Ensemble), and co-producer Ero Gray. Vinyl includes MP3 download.

Marnie Stern - This Is It & I Am It & You Are It & So Is That... CD/LP+MP3 (Kill Rock Stars)
Crazy talented and self-taught shredder Marnie Stern's sophomore release is a pop record for an alternate dimension. Think Yngwie's mastery and Dinosaur Jr's feelings. Features Zach Hill of Hella on drums and production.

Women - Women CD/LP+MP3 (Jagjaguwar)
Sometimes light and spacious, at other times eerie and dense with an ominous weight, this self titled album touches upon the vibe of The Velvet Underground, Swell Maps or This Heat -- a lo-fi masterpiece cloaked in layers of vibrato and guitar wash. Vinyl includes MP3 download.

Her Space Holiday - XOXO, Panda & The New Kid Revival CD (Mush)
Marc Bianchi creates sugarcoated dreamscapes floating alongside bittersweet narratives of life. On this release, loose and carefree arrangements of guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, shakers, glockenspiel, and drums lay the foundation for vocal storytelling sing-alongs. Bianchi's constant evolution as a songwriter and arranger continues to enchant.

Wu-Tang Clan - Soundtracks From The Shaolin Temple CD (Wanderluxe)
The entire Wu-Tang Clan (minus O.D.B.), the Wu-Tang Killa Beez (Bronze Nazareth, Killah Priest, Prodigal Sunn, Holocaust, Hell Razah), and more assemble the soundtrack backdrop to RZA's renowned first trip to China and the birthplace of modern kung-fu, the Shaolin Temple. Packaging contains a 90-page booklet with exclusive photos.

Jake One - White Van Music 3xCD (Rhymesayers)
Seattle super-producer steps from behind the mixing board to present his own debut. Featuring an engaging cast of emerging underground artists, as well as some of hip-hop's most respected mainstream acts, Jake One's release will blur the line between underground and hip-hop, just as his stellar production career (from De La Soul to 50 Cent) has. Special appearances by MF Doom, Brother Ali, Little Brother, Busta Rhymes, Prodigy and many more. Initial pressing features a bonus instrumental CD as well as a 34-track Mix Tape disc. That's three discs in all! Vinyl due 10/21.

Doomtree (P.O.S.) - Doomtree CD (Doomtree)
Minneapolis mainstays Doomtree are here with the punk/rap infused recordings that made group member POS a Rhymesayers superstar. They've sold thousands of CDs hand to hand at shows and what they've lacked is a nationally-distributed album to give them presence at retail. Here it is, the official debut album from Doomtree.

Devin The Dude - High Life CD (Rap-A-Lot)
Known more for blunts and beer that bullets and bling, Devin The Dude has kept a smile on hip-hop's face while most of his peers have opted for a menacing scowl.

The Primeridian - Da Mornin' Afta CD (All Natural)
Chicago hip-hoppers are back, showcasing their soulful and smooth vibe, but also displaying an edgier side. The album was produced by beatmakers from the UK and Europe such as the Netherlands' Nicolay, UK's Willow, Norway's J-Rose, and DJ Steady from France. Guest appearances include Naledge of Kidz In The Hall and Imani from The Pharcyde.

Attack! Attack! UK - Attack! Attack! UK (Rock Ridge)
Welsh band influenced by '80s punk, '90s grunge, pop, and new wave.

Cruiserweight - Big Bold Letters (Doghouse)
Texas band named Best Alternative/Punk Band four years running at the Austin Music Awards.

Pretty & Nice - Get Young CD (Hardly Art)
Ten tracks of sharp-toothed, heavily armed, brashly anthemic pop songs without an aural snag to be found.

Ezra Furman & The Harpoons - Inside The Human Body CD (Minty Fresh)
The new Violent Femmes? "A great young voice emitting sarcastic and clever Midwestern angst with a lot of intelligence and a lot of heart" --NPR

Search/Rescue - The Compound CD (Eyeball)
This Pacific Northwest band features members of Acceptance and Gatsbys American Dream. RIYL: Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Radiohead, Elliott Smith.

Hot Lava - Lavalogy CD (Bar None)
Richmond, VA's Hot Lava present a collection of incredibly fun, joyous, and endearing songs. Contemporary indie-rockness with a retro flair, calling to mind bobby socks and beach blanket bingo.

I Am Ghost - Those We Leave Behind CD (Epitaph)
Second album from the California dark rock quintet. Fourteen turbulent tracks of classic screamo combining sharp metallic riffs and soaring melodic choruses with tragic lyrics of love and decay.

F#cked Up - The Chemistry Of Common Life CD (Matador)
The second record from Toronto's hardcore wunderkinds is a dense, orchestral effort containing an expansive epic about the mysteries of birth, death, and the origins of life. Merging elements of hardcore songwriting with up to 70 tracks of guitars, organs, winds, and vocals, the songs are iconoclastic and startling, with Pink Eyes' growling vocals front and center. CD now, double-LP with download due 10/21.

I Set My Friends On Fire - You Can't Spell Slaughter Without Laughter CD (Epitaph)
This experimental electro-grind duo is the end result of a sonic mind-meld of two Miami teenagers, Nabil Moo and Matt Mihana. These precocious teens sucked up every musical genre that crossed their path, from boy band pop to Timbaland electrobeat to grindcore. Features their rock/screamo cover of Soulja Boy's "Crank Dat."

Land Of Talk - Some Are Lakes CD/LP+MP3 (Saddle Creek)
These songs set a perfect bridge from the jangling dissonance and ferocious doubled voicings of the band's debut, to the road-weathered clarity and reflection singer/songwriter Elizabeth Powell has now begun to own so fully. 180-gram vinyl includes MP3 download.

The Little Ones - Morning Tide CD (Chop Shop)
Perky indie-pop five-piece from LA. Think Beach Boys meet The Zombies.

Daniel Martin Moore - Stray Age CD (Sub Pop)
The debut by Kentucky's Moore is a folk record, rich with understated complexities that take you to places Nick Drake and Neil Halstead do.

Japanese Motors - Japanese Motors CD/LP+MP3 (Vice)
Debut album of sun-bleached guitar pop from this California band. Vinyl contains an MP3 download with bonus track.

These Are Powers -Terrific Seasons CD (Dead Oceans)
These Are Powers -Taro Tarot CDEP (Dead Oceans)
Tribal dub music that harkens back to such '80s groups as PiL or SST-era Sonic Youth.

Hauschka - Ferndorf CD (FatCat)
The fourth release from Dusseldorf-based pianist and composer Volker Bertelmann is at once nostalgic, optimistic, and weighty, with deft melody sparkling among percussion and drive.

Laurent Wolf - Wash My World CD (Ultra)
Wolf is one of the hottest producers to come out of the French music scene -- a sure-fire dance-pop crossover artist. Includes the worldwide hit "No Stress" which has received more than five million views on YouTube.

Armin Van Buuren - A State Of Trance 2008 2xCD (Ultra)
Van Buuren, current #1 DJ and one of the biggest names in the dance music world, keeps raising the bar with his fresh trance sounds and cutting edge mixes. This is the next chapter in his annual mix album series and a must-have for electronic music fans.

Kaskade - The Om Remixes CD (Om)
Twelve tracks of remixes, from Colette to Mark Farina to King Kooba and more.

Local Flavor...

John The Savage - Kitchen Voodoo CD (Bus Stop)
"One night, while on a worldwide voyage, a pirate captain fell in love with a fair-skinned gypsy. He courted her, they married and eventually gave birth to six beautiful children. They showered these children with weapons of sound: a piano, a megaphone, some guitars and a big-ass metal chain. The children mastered their sound, becoming one in the process. They called themselves John the Savage, and the people of the world smiled in acceptance." -- MKE

The Compilation Zone...

Various Artists - XL Recordings: The First Chapters CD (XL)
Between 1990 and 1995, XL Recordings issued a series of compilations (Chapters) featuring the cream of the underground club hits of the day. XL: The First Chapters is not only a trip to retro heaven for the old school, but also a perfect introduction for those not old enough to fully enjoy the last true underground youth movement of the 20th Century. Presented in vinyl replica gatefold die-cut packaging complete with collector's cards for each of the artists. File: House/Club.

Simply The Best...

Sarah McLachlan - Closer: The Best Of 2xCD (Arista)
Deluxe set includes 27 songs featuring all of her greatest hits and two brand new songs. Contains a 28-page booklet with rare photos and an art print.

John Adams - Hallelujah Junction: A Nonesuch Retrospective 2xCD (Nonesuch)
This two-disc compilation serves as a compelling soundtrack and companion piece to composer John Adams' memoir of the same name. It also functions as an eloquent, stand-alone survey of Adams' more than twenty-year affiliation with Nonesuch Records, opening with Part One of his 1986 label debut, Harmonielehre. Also included are excerpts from his ground-breaking and controversial 'docu-operas' Nixon In China and The Death Of Klinghoffer, as well as a piece from The Flowering Tree.

Charlie Pickett &... - Bar Band Americanus: The Best Of CD (Bloodshot)
If you accept the premise put forth by Keith Richards that the title of "greatest rock and roll band in the world" is determined on a nightly basis, then we want to tell you about some guys that owned it on quite a few nights in the 80's, a band that, for a variety of reasons, fell through the cracks and never got the recognition they deserved. Downright dirty rock 'n' blues. "Situating themselves at the crossroads where Johnny Thunders and Son House intersect, Charlie whipped up a bad voodoo vibe of heroin rock and midnight blues. These guys were one of the undiscovered giants of the late eighties." -- Peter Buck (R.E.M.)

Simply The Rest...

KMFDM - Extra: Volume 3 2xCD (Metropolis)
Latest in the series covers the years 1994 to 1998. The two-disc set contains 26 tracks with over two hours of singles, remixes, B-sides and more. Also includes a sixteen-page booklet featuring art, photos and anecdotes.

The Reissue Zone...

Crystal Antlers - Crystal Antlers CDEP CD (Touch & Go)
Previously self-released effort has now found a home on Chicago's Touch & Go records. CD now, vinyl soon. "Merging psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend." -- Pitchfork (8.5)

Anne Briggs - Anne Briggs CD (Water)
The first full length album from the legendary folk singer, originally released in 1971. Anne Briggs was a huge influence on the entire British folk-rock movement, especially other female singers such as Sandy Denny, Jacqui McShee, and Maddy Prior.

Sun Ra & His Solar Arkestra - Secrets of the Sun CD (Atavistic)
This mind-numbingly rare Saturn Records document from 1962 has never before been on CD and features a previously unreleased 17-minute track. With liner notes and rare photos.

For the holidays...

Julian Koster - The Singing Saw At Christmastime CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
Julian Koster (The Music Tapes, Neutral Milk Hotel) presents a new holiday classic. Join The Singing Saw Orchestra as they unite saws both young and old in an enchanting celebration of traditional Christmas songs. Culty and classic, it's the perfect soundtrack to an indie rock Christmas. Vinyl includes MP3 download.

The Brian Setzer Orchestra - Ultimate Christmas Collection CD+DVD (Surfdog)
The ultimate Brian Setzer Orchestra holiday package. The CD includes a brand new 'Best Of' collection featuring two previously unreleased tracks, and the DVD contains a full length BSO holiday concert filmed in December 2004 at L.A.'s sold out Universal Amphitheatre. It's a full 100-minute show with added backstage and behind-the-scenes footage. This is the same concert film that was broadcast on PBS stations during the 2006 fundraising drive.

The Vinyl Zone...

King Tuff is the brainchild of Kyle Thomas of the bands Witch and Feathers. This is a most pleasing daydream of a record, one that straddles the line between partying and napping.
